About this Event
Directed by Flavio Pedota
Narrative Film / Venezuela, Mexico / 95 mins
INFECTION comes out at a time when Venezuela’s collapse into political and social chaos is making headlines across the world’s media. Flavio Pedota’s feature debut knows its genre well and satisfyingly deploys many of the tropes featured in other successful zombie movies (28 DAYS LATER, THE CRAZIES, DAWN OF THE DEAD) to give expression to the growing unrest within his homeland. What really distinguishes his film is its location.
Shooting mainly in the northern Venezuelan province of Aragua, the film takes place on desolate rural plains, within the claustrophobic confines of a remote valley town and in the dense undergrowth of a jungle hiding all kinds of horrors.
Dr Adam Vargas is charismatically played by Ruben Guevara, as a father desperate to ensure the safety of his young son, Miguel, in the face of growing civic chaos. He is aided in this quest by his resourceful neighbour Johnny (Leonidas Urbina). At times Pedota’s film has the feel of a road movie as written by the Brothers Grimm, with Adam and Johnny ultimately looking to get to Grandma’s house. There are no big, bad wolves here though, just lots of exceptionally bitey zombies. / Reviewed by Rohan Berry Crickmar
