About this Event
Directed by Jelle Stroo
Narrative Feature / Belgium / 77 mins
Writer and director Jelle Stroo describes LA DEUXIÈME as “almost a parable”. Eschewing realism for a distinct surrealism, his film very much reflects its title. Directly, it is a chamber drama about a commune, or perhaps cult, of people seeking to restart their lives and find new meaning. But it is also a consideration on grief, trauma, and an iterative sense of identity. Can one start a new life entirely? Or are we bound to ourselves forever, regardless of our efforts?
Stroo explores these ideas through a balance of character relationships and wider, overarching themes, the result a film of poignancy and definite staying power.
Working with a nearly identical cast and crew to his 2015 debut ÉGOÏSTE, Stroo has clearly struck a dynamic relationship with his collaborators.
Especially remarkable is the cinematography by Daniele Vella, which achieves a close, intimate understanding of the film’s various characters, maintaining a verité style despite the occasionally fantastic events that occur. The performances are also notable, each actor playing their role with a subdued, even somnambulistic gait.
Emotions are sublimated and a certain detachment pervades, and this affected normality serves only to deepen the absurdity otherwise at play. LA DEUXIÈME is an unusual, strangely inviting film. / Review by Milo Garner
