About this Event
Directed by Marcos Prado
Narrative Feature / Brazil / 103 mins
What happens to a community when two of their own turn animalistic? Young policeman Teo (Renato Góes) returns to the village he grew up in – and ran away from – in order to catch a pair of darkly violent brothers who have begun to brutally and ritualistically target the community. Teo seeks explanations and justice. But both the community he was raised in, and his police superiors, are just seeking retribution.
It’s hard not to consider the landscape a character in this film as it is so captivating – the crew have clearly worked hard to provide the purest visuals. These offer a cleansing contrast to the brooding lead and persistent violence laced throughout the film. Though it certainly contains some scenes which make for uncomfortable viewing, the performances from the cast and the technical proficiency of the crew create a film well worth watching.
The pace is oddly calming, given the subject matter, though there is persistent threat throughout, and the sound design keeps the viewer’s adrenaline amped throughout the quieter scenes. MACABRE is both a thriller and a horror, with a murder mystery feel to the dialogue and character relations, mixed with a healthy dose of violence and gore. / Rebecca Drummond Cribb
