Children are mysteriously going missing in Walbrzych, a Polish provincial town in Lower Silesia, a part of the country that suffered at the hands of both the Germans and the Russians during WWII.

Alicja Tabor (Magdalena Cielecka), an investigative journalist on the hunt for a new story, returns to her hometown to interview the families of the missing children. This homecoming is a far from pleasant one for Alicja, as it reawakens long suppressed memories.

As the journalist probes further into the history of her hometown she begins to ask questions that many in Walbrzych do not want answered. Why are Walbrzych’s children disappearing and what does that have to do with a mysterious old castle overlooking the town? Before too long, Alicja finds herself embroiled in a struggle for sanity amidst the deluge of history.

Joanna Bator is one of Poland’s best-selling contemporary writers and her gripping 2013 gothic horror detective novel has been stylishly adapted for the screen by Borys Lankosz, acclaimed director of the macabre period black comedy REWERS (2009). / Reviewed by Rohan Berry Crickmar
