This Week’s Horror Releases: 25th July

Looking for something new to watch this week? Here’s a list of all of this week’s new horror releases across cinemas and the main VOD platforms. We’ll also give you a quick run down of what came out last week, in case you missed anything!

The Reef: Stalked (2022)

Shudder, from Thursday 29th July. Dir: Andrew Traucki. Starring: Teressa Liane, Ann Truong, Kate Lister.

In an effort to heal after witnessing her sister’s horrific murder, Nic, her younger sister Annie and two close friends travel to a remote Pacific Island for a kayaking and diving adventure. Hours into their expedition, the women are stalked and attacked by a Great White shark. To survive, they will need to band together, and Nic will have to overcome her post-traumatic stress, face her fears, and slay a monster.

REC (2007)

Shudder, from Monday 25th July. Dir: Jaume Balagueró, Paco Plaza. Starring: Manuela Velasco, Ferran Terazza, Jorge-Yamam Serrano

A TV reporter and her cameraman are doing a routine interview at a local fire station when an emergency call comes in. Accompanying the firefighters to a nearby apartment, the news team begins recording the bloodcurdling screams from inside an elderly woman’s unit. After authorities seal off the building to contain the threat, the news crew, firefighters and residents are trapped to face a lethal terror inside. With the camera running, nothing may survive but the film itself.

Rawhead Rex (1986)

Shudder, from Monday 25th July. Dir: George Pavlou. Starring: David Dukes, Kelly Piper, Hugh O’Conor.

An ancient creature called Rawhead is awakened from its slumber near an Irish village and goes on a rampage killing anyone in sight.

She Will

In selected cinemas from Friday 22nd July. Dir: Charlotte Colbert. Starring: Malcolm McDowell, Alice Krige, Rupert Everett.

The film explores the story of Veronica Ghent (Alice Krige) who after a double mastectomy, goes to a healing retreat in rural Scotland with her young nurse Desi (Kota Eberhardt). She discovers that the process of such surgery opens up questions about her very existence, leading her to start to question and confront past traumas. The two develop an unlikely bond as mysterious forces give Veronica the power to enact revenge within her dreams.

Moloch (2022)

Shudder, from Thursday 21st July. Dir: Nico van den Brink. Starring: Sallie Harmsen, Anneke Blok, Markoesa Hamer.

Betriek lives at the edge of a peat bog in the North of the Netherlands. When she and her family are attacked by a random stranger one night, Betriek sets out to find an explanation. The more she digs, the more she becomes convinced that she is being hunted by something ancient.

This Is GWAR (2022)

Shudder, from Thursday 21st July. Dir: Scott Barber. Starring: Ethan Embry, Jon Freeman.

The powerful story of the most iconic heavy metal/art collective/monster band in the universe, as told by the humans who have fought to keep it alive for over thirty years.

Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge (1989)

Shudder, from Monday 18th July. Dir: Richard Friedman. Starring: Derek Rydall, Jonathan Goldsmith, Rob Estes.

A man loses his home and suffers life-threatening burns from a fire deliberately set by commercial real estate developers vying for his property. One year later, a shopping mall opens on the land, and a series of murders begins.

El Topo (1970)

Shudder, from Monday 18th July. Dir: Alejandro Jodorowsky. Starring: Alejandro Jodorowsky, Brontis Jodorowsky, Jose Legarreta.

A mysterious black-clad gunfighter wanders a mystical Western landscape encountering multiple bizarre characters.

The Holy Mountain (1973)

Shudder, from Monday 18th July. Dir: Alejandro Jodorowsky. Starring: Alejandro Jodorowsky, Horacio Salinas, Zamira Saunders.

In a corrupt, greed-fuelled world, a powerful alchemist leads a messianic character and seven materialistic figures to the Holy Mountain, where they hope to achieve enlightenment.

Fando y Lis (1968)

Shudder, from Monday 18th July. Dir: Alejandro Jodorowsky. Starring: Tamara Garina, Sergio Kleiner, Diana Mariscal.

In Jodorowsky’s absurdist, post-apocalyptic debut feature, Fando and his partner Lis seek the legendary fabled city of Tar, where Lis hopes to be cured of her handicap.
