Top 10 Video Games That All Horror Fans Should Play

Being a big kid, I loved to play video games. In fact, I still do and they are to me, a good way to get lost in a different world and I look at them as films that you can play along to (I know, sounds pathetic). But horror video games if done properly are just as scary as a film. So, I decided to compile a short list of my favourite video games that all horror fans must play.

  1. Alien Isolation

Alien Isolation is set in 2137, 15 years after the events of Ridley Scott’s Alien and 42 years before Aliens. The plot follows Amanda Ripley, who is investigating the disappearance of Ellen Ripley (her mother). Amanda travels to the space station Sevastopol to recover the flight recorder of the Nostromo only to discover an Alien on board has killed majority of the crew.

  1. Alan Wake

Alan Wake is a best-selling thriller novelist, who tries to uncover the mystery behind his
wife’s disappearance during a vacation in the small fictional town of Bright Falls, Washington. During his search, Alan begins experiencing events from the plot in his latest novel, which he cannot remember writing, coming to life.

  1. Silent Hill 4: The Room

The plot follows Henry Townshend, a resident of the South Ashfield Heights Apartments building in the fictitious town of Ashfield. He finds himself locked in his apartment for five days with no means of communication and having recurring nightmares. Shortly afterwards, a hole appears in the wall of his bathroom, through which he enters alternate dimensions.

  1. The Evil Within

While investigating the scene of a gruesome mass murder, Detective Sebastian Castellanos encounters a mysterious force. After witnessing the slaughter of his colleagues, Sebastian is ambushed and knocked unconscious. When awakening, he finds himself in a strange world where odd creatures wander among the dead. Facing unimaginable terror, and fighting for survival, Sebastian embarks on a frightening journey to unravel what’s behind this evil force.

  1. Dead Space

Set in the future, where the need for new resources has become a reason for Earth’s deep space exploration; Immense, privately-owned and operated mining ships called “planetcrackers” orbit planets and use sophisticated equipment to carve out entire city-sized chunks of rock, and reduce them to component elements and raw ore. Communications with one of these planetcrackers, the USG Nishimura, have ceased while the ship is engaged in deep space mining operations. The company’s top engineer, Isaac Clarke, is sent to discover the problem and fix it. Once onboard the vessel, Clarke discovers that a terrifying alien presence has taken over the ship, and has horribly killed the crew. Weaponless and terrified, this lone engineer is burdened with much more than simple survival – he holds the fate of all mankind in his hands.

Chris Redfield returns from the original Resident Evil. After joining a new organisation, Chris heads to Africa where the latest bioterrorism threat is literally transforming the people and animals of the city into mindless creatures. Chris must take on the challenge of discovering the truth behind this evil plot.

  1. The Darkness

The Darkness is about a mafia hitman named Jackie Estacado, who on his 21st birthday has the powers of the Darkness awaken within him allowing Jackie to wreak havoc on his enemies. After being betrayed by his mafia boss “Uncle” Paulie who proceeds to kill his girlfriend, Jackie decides to use The Darkness to seek revenge.

  1. F.E.A.R

A paramilitary force infiltrates a multi-billion dollar aerospace compound taking hostages, but issuing no demands. The government responds by sending in its best special operations teams, only to have them obliterated. Live footage of the massacre is cut short by an unexpected wave of destruction that leaves military leaders stunned and in disbelief.

With U.S. Special Forces in over their heads, the Commander in Chief turns to his final option: you. You’ve been trained to handle the inexplicable, armed with experimental high tech weaponry, and given full executive authority to end the crisis by any means necessary.

He escapes to the local shopping mall, thinking it will be a bastion of safety yet it turns out to be anything but.
